Sammy, a 10-year old retired black lab served his community of Rexburg, Idaho, as a dedicated police officer. Now, he has been in the Rexburg Animal Shelter for months up for adoption.
His previous handler, Rexburg police officer, Sgt. Ray Hermosillo, notes that he's a good dog. Hermosillo knows that retired police dogs make great pets. He says, "They listen better. They're trained. They're loyal." Certainly, there might be some reason why Sgt. Hermosillo, himself, did not keep Sammy. Maybe there's a valid reason why none of the other officers in Rexburg gave Sammy a home. However, it does seem unusual that a decorated four-legged officer who served so long and so well would end up in an animal shelter for months, waiting for a new home.
Although Sammy is not on the list of animals to be put down at the shelter, who knows what the future might hold? If you are interested in giving Sammy the retirement he deserves, you can contact the Rexburg Animal Shelter at AnimalShelter@rexburg.org, or by calling (208) 359-3005.
